Taraporewala to be transformed into state-of-the-art aquarium

Taraporewala AquariumA Memorandum of Understanding to transform the Taraporewala Aquarium opposite the Girgaum Chowpatty in South Mumbai into a `state of the art' aquarium was signed on December 2, 2000, in Mumbai. The MoU was signed between the Singapore-based Alliance Technology and Development Company and SICOM, a Maharashtra government undertaking and Maharashtra Fisheries Development Corporation..

The project outlay estimated at US $ 30 million is being invested by Alliance Technology and Development Company which has the requisite technical expertise and is world famous for setting up a chain of Fifth Generation aquaria around the globe.  Besides, Alliance Technology and Development Company is known for extending a result oriented management in such highly specialised projects.

Fifth Generation, the world's best technology currently in vogue, would be applied while developing the new aquarium. This modernised aquarium would enable visitors to travel around within a tube channel in a 180 degree and 360 degree angle, to witness the spectacular under-sea marine life. The aquarium is being developed on similar lines like the high-tech aquarium at Santossa, one of the main tourist attraction spot in Singapore. The aquarium in Mumbai, will be one of its kind in the country.

In addition, the new aquarium would also house a multi-media centre, various pavilions, a library and a theatre. Other amenities would include a laboratory, a cafeteria, office space and open as well as subterranean parking space for the benefit of visitors to the aquarium. The fully modernised aquarium will be completed and open for viewing within 18 months from the date of commencement of work, as per the orders of the Bombay High Court. Modernising the Taraporewala aquarium is part of the state government's plan to give Mumbai a face lift.
